Background: THE DECISION OF THE GREEK GOVERNMENT BEFORE THE WEEKEND TO CLOSE ITS CONSULATE IN RHODESIA NOW LEAVES ONLY THE SOUTH AFRICAN AND PORTUGUESE CONSULATES REMAINING IN SALISBURY.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN AND PORTUGUESE CONSULATES IN SALISBURY HAVE REMAINED OPEN FOR BUSINESS USUAL THIS WEEK, FOLLOWING SATURDAY'S CLOSURE OF THE GREEK CONSULATE.

THERE WAS LITTLE OR NO CHANGE IN THEIR DAILY ACTIVITIES. IT NOW APPEARS THAT THESE TWO CONSULATES WILL BE THE ONLY ONES REMAINING OF THE THIRTEEN ORIGINALLY LOCATED IN THE RHODESIAN CAPITAL.

LAST THURSDAY (19 MARCH) RHODESIAN PREMIER IAN SMITH, SPEAKING AT AN ELECTION CAMPAIGN MEETING NEAR BEITBRIDGE, SAID THAT HE HAD ADVISED A FOREIGN POWER TO WITHDRAW ITS CONSULATE FROM RHODESIA, UNDER BRITISH PRESSURE, RATHER THAN CURTAIL ITS PLANS FOR INCREASING TRADE WITH RHODESIA. THEY WERE RELUCTANT TO DO SO, HE SAID, BUT ASSURED HIM IT WOULD BE A TEMPORARY MEASURE.

THE GREEK GOVERNMENT LATER ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAD DECIDED TO CLOSE ITS CONSULATE FOLLOWING THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL ORDER, THE PREVIOUS DAY, THAT ALL RELATIONS WITH THE WHITE-MINORITY RHODESIA REGIME BE SEVERED.

BRITAIN HOWEVER IS TO MAINTAIN "COMMUNICATION" WITH SALISBURY.
