Background: A multi-million dollar watch & clock collection has gone on show in Jerusalem's newly opened L.A.Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Art in a seperate basement showroom. It is the collection of Sir David Salomons, first Jewish Lord Mayor of London ever, and was donated by his daughter Mrs. Vera Bryce-Salomons. Not large in quantity but of highest quality it contains priceless and unique timepieces and music boxes, invaluable in their mastery of construction by such exerts as Breguet of Paris, Raby and Jaquet Droze as well as Leschot of London and many other masters of the art who also produced fanciful singing-bird timepieces and music boxes, even a singing bird bracelet and a singing bird perfume-flask with a watch set in, a rolling ball clock and a sympathetic clock, a singing bird revolver with an inset watch and the thinnest ever sel-winding pocket watch for such celebrities as Louis XVIII, King George III, the Prince of Wales in 1805, Jerome Bonaparte in 1806 and the Prince of Spain, the Queen of Naples and Marie Antoinette, as well as the Queen of Spain and Ging George the IVth. The watch for Marie Antoinette alone took 13 years to make at a cost of no less than Ffr 30.000.- of those days and is a unique piece produced by Abraham Louis Breguet; it incorporates in its housing small seconds, jumping seconds, minutes and hours, the day of the week and the date as well as the up-and-down of the mainspring of the watch (i.e. indicating when it is time to rewind it) as well as the difference of meantime versus solar time and a thermometer. The sympathetic clock by Raby and the watch by Brequet, both made around 1815 in Paris is numbered #722. No two such clocks were ever made alike and apart from some which may be hidden in privat collections only two such time pieces are known to exist outside the one in Jerusalem:- 1 at Backingham Palace and the other at the Heremitage at Leningrad. Both the singing bird bracelet and the singing bird pistol are the only known pieces of its kind whilst the perfume-flask cum
watch cumsinging bird back is a masterpeice of workmanship.- The collection will greatly add to the cultural attractions of Jerusalem and is already attracting tourists and Israelis alike. Mr. Ohannes Markarian is the official watchmaker of the collection and an Armenian of the Old City of Jerusalem.
