  • Description

Kenya's Vice President Daniel arap Moi told representatives from many African countries that by pooling their know-how and resources they could gain greater freedom from controllable diseases.

Mr. arap Moi was speaking at the opening of the third Commonwealth Regional Health Conference for east, central and southern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday (4 November).

He told delegates that while they all thanked advanced countries that had made facilities available for their students, it was undesirable that they should continue to depend on such countries for assistance.

Mr. arap Moi said shortage of trained medical personnel remained one of the greatest constraints on the improvement of the health service in Kenya. He was sure the need to accelerate training was a problem common to all the countries of the region.

The four day conference will discuss the training of tutors for medical health personnel; rural health development; nursing textbooks; teaching materials; and co-operation in medical research.

Kenya, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia have representatives at the conference.
