  • Description

Lebanese leftist leader Kamal Julblatt on Tuesday (5 October) accused the United States and Israel of using Syria as an agent in Lebanon for their "very low interests". Mr. Jumblatt told a news conference in Paris, where he has been discussing the Lebanese civil war with French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, that he would be more hopeful about peace if the Syrians would withdraw their troops. France has sent messages to Lebanese, Egyptian and Syrian leaders expressing readiness to take diplomatic steps to help stop the civil war, and Mr. Jublatt was also asked during the news conference about the possible use of French troops as a peacekeeping force.
