  • Description

Belgian Jackie Ickx took Ferrari to their first formula One triumph in two years when he won the Austrian Grand Prix in Zeltweg on Sunday (16 August). Ickx and Ferrari team mate Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland finished first and second as 12-cylinder machines finally achieved their long-awaited breakthrough. Five of the first six cars to cross the finishing line after 60 laps of the 5.91 km (3.69 mile) Oesterreich circuit were 12-cylinder machines.

Ickx and Regazzoni led from the start to give the Italian firm their first triumph since the French Grand Prix in Rouen in 1968. West German Rolf Stommelen in a Brabham was third.

Stommelen secured his best placing in Grand Prix competition when he took advantage of an enforced pit stop by France's Jean-Pierre Beltoise in a Matra three laps from the finish to clinch third place.

Ickx and Regazzoni hurtled past the finishing line within a second of each other, and both claimed the official lap record during the race. Ickx had a winning time of one hour 42 minutes, 17.32 seconds -- an average time speed of 211.96 kph (130.025 mph)
The world championship table remained virtually unaltered after mechanical difficulties put the four leading drivers out of the race. Jochen Rindt of Austria, and current world champion, was forced to retire with engine trouble. Rindt's departure, on his home ground, was a severe disappointment to the many Austrian fans.

After the race, hundreds of exultant Italians spilled out onto the track and for some minutes race officials were unable to carry on with the award ceremony.
