  • Description

NEW YORK -- The World's fastest helicopter and the world's most maneuverable today were named award winners in the annual international "I-R 100" competition.

Sharing a joint award, these Lockheed-California Company rigid-rotor helicopters were the only aircraft award winners among the 100 listed as the most significant new products.

    The two helicopters are:
The Army XH-51A compound (winged with forward thrust propulsion) helicopter which last year reached an unofficial rotorcraft record speed of 302 miles (483 kilometres) per hour during a research program conducted by Lockheed for the U.S. Army Aviation Material Laboratories (AVLABS).

The Lockheed Model 286, believed the first helicopter to do a barrel roll and which has also performed loops and other aerobatic maneuvers considered impossible for most "choppers" to show the outstanding control and stability of rigid-rotor aircraft.

Official presentation of all "I-R 100" awards will take place tomorrow evening in New York (Hilton Hotel) where exhibits of the winning products are being shown. The event highlights observance of National Industrial Research Week.

The "I-R 100" winners were selected by a panel of 30 leading scientists and engineers who serve on the editorial advisory board of Industrial Research magazine. The judges included five Nobel laureates; the inventors of radar and laser; pioneers in stroboscopic photography, galactic astronomy, and electron microscopy; and the directors of major research institutes and laboratories.

In the "I-R 100" award announcement, it was noted the XH-51A "demonstrates the feasibility of high-velocity helicopters, previously unattainable in machines of this type" and the Model 286 "permits much greater stability and maneuverability than previously attainable in conventional helicopters."
The annual new products competition is sponsored by Industrial Research Inc., which publishes a number of technical magazines in various science-engineering fields.
