  • Description

The severe floods which struck West Bengal last week-end (October 3-4) have caused 50 deaths, it is reported, and widespread damage. An estimated million acres of land have been submerged and many people driven from their homes.

As the floods hit the countryside, water from the swollen Damodar River and its tributaries had to be released by the Damodar Valley Project authorities to protect the Maithon and Panchat Dams.

At first, bad weather hampered rescue and relief operations, but later emergency food supplies were distributed to the flood victims.
