  • Description

IN ST. PETER'S BASILICA, VATICAN CITY, POPE PAUL TODAY (SUNDAY) PROCLAIMED 22 NEW SAINTS -- ALL OF THEM ARE AFRICAN MARTYRS FROM UGANDA. THE MARTYRS WERE KILLED, FOR THEIR FAITH, IN PERSECUTION BY KING MWANDA, BETWEEN 1885 AND 1887, AND ARE THE FIRST AFRICAN ROMAN CATHOLIC LAYMEN TO BE CANONISED.

TODAY'S SOLEMN CEREMONY IN ST. PETER'S WAS ATTENDED BY A BIG CROWD, INCLUDING MANY AFRICAN PILGRIMS, TWO CHARTERED AIRCRAFT HAD BROUGHT 185 ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIESTS AND LAYMEN FROM UGANDA FOR THE CEREMONY. MANY OF THEM WERE DESCENDANTS OF THE MARTYRS -- AND SOME OF KING MWANDA. ALSO IN THE CROWD WERE BISHOPS AND OBSERVERS ATTENDING THE PRESENT SESSION OF THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL.

THE UGANDA MARTYRS WERE BEATIFIED, THE LAST STAGE BEFORE SAINTHOOD, BY POPE BENEDICT XV, IN JUNE, 1920. POPE JOHN XXXIII INITIATED THE LAST STAGE IN 1960, AND THE CARDINALS WERE CALLED TO THE VATICAN TO DISCUSS THE CANONISATION LAST MONTH BY POPE PAUL VI.

AT THE TIME OF THE MARTYRS' DEATHS, UGANDA HAD ABOUT 400 ROMAN CATHOLICS. NOW THERE ARE MORE THAN 2,000,000 -- OR ABOUT A THIRD OF THE POPULATION. MOST OF THE MARTYRS, WHO WERE BURNED ALIVE, WERE MEMBERS OF THE COURT OF THE YOUNG KING.

(TODAY IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT POPE PAUL WILL VISIT INDIA NEXT MONTH FOR THE INTERNATIONAL ECUMENICAL CONGRESS IN BOMBAY).
