    DRIVING A FORD GT 40, THEY SPED AROUND THE TRACK 100 TIMES IN FIVE HOURS, 18 MINUTES AND 23.4 SECONDS, AVERAGING 190.332 KILOMETRES PER HOUR (118.26 MPH).

    WEST GERMAN ROLF STOMMELEN AND JOCHEN NEERPASCH, DRIVING A PORSCHE 2200--ONE OF PORSCHE'S THREE OFFICIAL ENTRIES--WERE SECOND WITH FIVE HOURS 20 MINUTES AND 15.8 SECONDS.

    IN THREE PREVIOUS DUELS BETWEEN THE TWO RIVAL MANUFACTURERS, THIS YEAR PORSCHE WON THE FIRST TWO RACES AT SEBRING AND DAYTONA IN THE UNITED STATES, AND FORD THE THIRD AT BRANDS HATCH EARLIER THIS MONTH.

    FRENCHMEN PATRICK DEPAILLER AND ANDRE DECOSTANZE, DRIVING A RENAULT 2-220, FINISHED THIRD, THREE LAPS BEHIND. THEY CLOCKED FIVE HOURS, 20 MINUTES AND 37 SECONDS.

    FOR THE FIRST 27 LAPS THE OTHER OFFICIAL FORD ENTRY PILOTED BY BELGIAN JACKY ICKX AND BRITON BRIAN REDMAN LED THE PACK BUT TROUBLES WITH THE EXHAUST PIPE FORCED THEM BACK INTO THE PITS.

    FRENCH SKI CHAMPION JEAN CLAUDE KILLY, DRIVING A PORSCHE 911T WITH COMPATRIOT JEAN GUICHET, CAME IN TENTH OVERALL AND SECOND IN THE GT CATEGORY.
