  • Description

A BIG FIRE SWEEPING THROUGH SOUTHERN BOSTON THIS WEEKEND DESTROYED OR DAMAGED TEN BUILDINGS BEFORE IT WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL BY HUNDREDS OF FIREMEN. THE BLAZE BROKE OUT IN A COMPLEX OF BUILDINGS THAT HAD BEEN ABANDONED TO MAKE WAY FOR AN EXTENSION OF THE MASSACHUSETTS TURNPIKE -- A HIGH-SPEED MOTOR EXPRESSWAY LEADING INTO BOSTON.

WINDS REACHING 35 MILES AN HOUR (56 KPH) CARRIED FLAMING EMBERS OVER A WIDE AREA, STARTING FIRES IN SEVERAL OTHER LOCATIONS, ONE AS FAR AS A MILE AWAY. ALSO SET A BLAZE WERE A RAILROAD BRIDGE AND OLD PILINGS AND PIERS.

FIREMEN FROM FIFTEEN OTHER COMMUNITIES JOINED LOCAL FIREMEN IN THE BATTLE. DESPITE THE SEVERITY OF THE BLAZE, NO ONE WAS HURT. A COLUMN OF DENSE SMOKE COULD BE SEEN TWENTY MILES AWAY, AND TRAFFIC WAS TIED UP IN ONE OF THE WORST JAMS BOSTON HAS EVER SEEN.
