Background: Palestinian gunmen who seized three Egyptian diplomats on Monday (15 September) threatened to blow them, and their embassy sky high with dynamite unless Egypt renounced the recent peace accord with Israel.

But after the midnight local time deadline passed it appeared, according to reports from Madrid, the gunmen were prepared to reduce their demands.

Refuters quoted one of the gunmen as saying they would fly to Algeria with their hostages, accompanied by the Iraqi and Algerian ambassadors on board a special aircraft supplied by Algeria. He refused to say more. A second report said the might release the hostages once they board the plane.

Another gunmen told the Spanish State Radio that the ambassadors of Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Kuwait and Egypt had signed a statement denouncing the Egypt-Israel peace agreement.

Refuters, reporting from Madrid said this move appeared partially t meet the Palestinian demand that Egypt denounce the agreement.

Spanish riot police formed a cordon around the embassy and a yellow minibus drew up alongside the entrance late on Monday night, arousing speculation among bystanders that the Palestinians and their hostages were about to be transported to the airport.

In a radio telephone interview with the B.B.C., the Egyptian Ambassador to Spain, Mr. Mahmoud Ghaffar said that the gunmen clearly meant business. He added that they had laid dynamite at every corner of the building.

And Mr. Ghaffar said that his captors had already told the police they were prepared to shoot their hostages if threatened.

Apparently there was a total of five gunmen in the building although eyewitnesses said they only spotted four. Inside the building at one stage were the Kuwaiti and Algerian Ambassadors along with the Madrid representative of Palestinian Liberation Organisation.

There were no reports of any casualties.....
