  • Description

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS OF BEIRUT YESTERDAY IN A MASS DEMONSTRATION IN SUPPORT OF PRESIDENT NASSER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC. WAVING BANNERS AND CHANTING SLOGANS, THEY WERE DEMANDING HE WITHDRAW HIS RESIGNATION AND REMAIN LEADER OF THE ARAB WORLD. WHEN NEWS CAME THAT PRESIDENT NASSER HAD DECIDED TO REMAIN AS LEADER, THE CROWDS DANCED IN THE STREETS.

MOTORCADES OF CARS WITH HONKING HORNS DROVE THROUGH THE STREETS WHILE CROWDS OF MEN AND WOMEN WAVED PORTRAITS OF BOTH PRESIDENT NASSER AND KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN.

THE MASS DEMONSTRATION CO-INCIDED WITH A GENERAL STRIKE CALLED BY LEGANESE UNIONS TO SHOW SOLIDARITY WITH THE EGYPTIAN LEADERSHIP, AND THIS PARALYSED COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES IN THE LEBANESE CAPITAL.

THE PRO-NASSER PARADES HAD GONE ON THROUGHOUT THE PREVIOUS NIGHT, STARTING FROM THE TIME, ON FRIDAY EVENING, WHEN PRESIDENT NASSER ANNOUNCED HIS FIRST DECISION TO STAND DOWN, A PARTIAL CURFEW HAD BEEN IMPOSED IN BEIRUT BECAUSE CERTAIN "RIOTOUS ELEMENTS" HAD TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS FOR "SABOTAGE".

DURING YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATIONS, CROWDS DESIEGED THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC IN BEIRUT, DEMANDING THAT PRESIDENT NASSER REMAIN IN OFFICE.
