    South Africa is now the "de facto authority" in Rhodesia, through its support for the Government of Prime Minister Ian Smith, the Chairman Monday (May 19).

    Mr. Salim Ahmed Salim, who is Tanzanian Ambassador to the U.n., said the attitude of South African Prime Minister John Vorster was "very very vital in the solution of the Rhodesia problem".

    Mr. Salim, speaking at a news conference called to mark the opening of South African Solidarity week, said Mr. Vorster was motivated by what he thought were the interests of South Africa.

    The 24 nation committee which Mr. Salim heads will meet in Lisbon from June 12 to 19 on Southern African problems.
