Background: In the Khmer Republic, communist forces have been maintaining a series of heavy attacks on towns near Phnom-Penh. On Saturday (31 March) a command post on Highway two near the town of Chambak (pro.Chum-buk) fell with more than 50 killed and many missing and wounded.
On Monday the communists launched a full scale attack on the town itself and quickly encircled it. After about 6 hours, the defenders were forced to leave the town and began to fight their way out. Some, accompanied by their dependents, made it. But all were battle weary and despondent...a rare thing for these men. The troops were members of the 37th Infantry Brigade and in a long uninterrupted spell of fighting they've taken heavy casualties.
Elsewhere in Khmer, Communist forces are continuing heavy attacks and are keeping a stranglehold on supply routes to Phnom Penh.
SYNOPSIS: These men are government soldiers in the Khmer Republic...they've just fought their way out of a town attacked and encircled by Communist forces. A few hours ago they were defending the town of Chambak near Phnom Penh.
This soldier and his wife were still suffering from their own personal tragedy...their children had been killed int he attack.
Two days before this film was taken a command post near the town fell with more than fifty defenders killed and many more missing or wounded. Forty-eight hours later, communist forces attacked the town itself with heavy mortar and rocket shelling. They followed this up with a large ground attack, and casualties in the town became heavy. The defenders decided to fight their way out, taking their dependents with them where possible.
They began reaching the town of Samrong Yong a few hours later... they were battle-weary and despondent ... a rare thing for these people. Members of the 37th Infantry Brigade, they've had a long, uninterrupted spell of fighting. Casualties have been heavy and the men seem to be losing ground, confidence and morale.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Khmer Republic, the Communist forces are continuing heavy attacks; and at present they have a stranglehold on supply routes to Phnom Penh.
