Background: A Soviet built prefabricated panel factory in Accra, Ghana, abandoned at the time of the 1966 coup which overthrew the Nkrumah regime, is to be brought into full production soon.

On Thursday (9 April) the Commissioner for Works and Housing, Col. Robert Kotei and Col. George Slater, Managing Director of the State Housing Corporation visited the reinforced panel factory to see how best this can be achieved.

Factory manager Mr. Ala Lomo said when the factory was in full production it would speed up the work of the State Housing Corporation by five times and reduce the cost of building.

Soviet experts who visited factory last year said that it could be reactivated.

Last November Colonel I. K. Acheampong, Chairman of Ghana's National Redemption Council officially opened fish processing and canning fractures which were also abandoned after the 1966 coup.

The Soviet report on the prefabricated panel factory said the factory's precast panels would reduce the cost of building dwelling houses compared with traditional methods.
