  • Description

Spanish tradition demands that the Three Kings--otherwise known as the Three Wise Men--distribute presents rather than Father Christmas.

On Wednesday (5 January), the children of Madrid were finally rewarded for their behaviour during last year--presents were left in their shoes if they had been good, while others were later to wake up to find lumps of coal signifying their benefactor's disapproval.

The feast of the Epiphany is not only the highlight of the year for the children. Tradition dictates that the Dutch Father Christmas--"Santa Claus"--originally came from Alicante on the Spanish east coast. Local Government officials regard the procession of the Three Kings, who are reputed to have borne gifts to the infant Christ, as one of the most important festivals in the country.
