  • Description

At a rally in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Sunday (10 December), palestinian leaders called for a renewed armed struggle against Israel.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of members of supporters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) packed the Municipal Stadium in the Fakhani sector of Beirut for the rally, which marked the 11th anniversary of the Front's founding.

The rally was timed to coincide with the presentation, in Norway, of the Nobel Peace Prize to Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, represented by an ???nvoy, for their continuing efforts to secure a Middle East peace settlement. The PFLP has long been one of the most implacable opponents of any peaceful settlement with Israel.

The show of armed strength at the rally and its mood left no doubt about Palestinian attitude to the prizegiving ceremony in Oslo, which was also the scene of pro-Palestinian demonstration. Palestine Liberation Organisation Chairman Yasser Arafat, also put in an appearance with Dr Habash.

Mr Arafat made a brief speech in which he urged renewed armed action against Israel.

He said that for the Palestinians, the only road to achieving their own homeland was an armed struggle. He said the PLO and PFLP would have to fight every inch of the way.

Dr Habash, who was wildly cheered as he rose to speak, said he was restating the PFLP's rejection of any negotiated Meddle East settlement that gave the Palestinians self-determination in only limited parts of their claimed homeland. The victories of what he described as progressive forces in Vietnam, Angola, Cuba and Mozambique had, he said, given the Palestinians confidence in ultimate victory. He repeatedly condemned President Sadat's peace initiative, saying Egypt had exposed the Arab world to what he termed the 'Zionist cancer'.
