  • Description

In Israel, the ruling council of the middle-of-the-road Democratic Movement for Change, the DMC, has voted to join the right-wing government coalition of Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The move increases the government's voting majority in the 120-seat parliament from six to 36.

SYNOPSIS: The decision was announced in Prime Minister Begin's office in Jerusalem at a meeting between representatives of the DMC and the government. Mr. Begin, who was among the first to arrive, had been seeking the support of the DMC since the new coalition government was formed last June.

DMC leader Professor Vigael Yadin said he was ending the party's resistance to joining the coalition because of growing differences between the United States and Israel over Palestinian representation at the proposed Middle East peace talks in Geneva. He had previously refused several invitations to join the government, mainly because Mr. Begin refused the DMC's demands for electoral reform. Professor Yadin spoke to reporters after the meeting.

Professor Yadin is expected to be offered the post of Deputy Prime Minister, with the automatic right to inherit the premiership in Mr. Begin's absence.
