  • Description

The East Mekong village of Preah Prasap, (pronounced "pree-ah prah-sop") about 16 miles (25 Kms) north-east of Phnom Penh in the Khmer Republic (formerly known as Cambodia), has been the centre of heavy fighting between Khmer troops and Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces for the last month.

The fighting has been the direct result of the determination of the Khmer forces to stop the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese occupying the area in order to guard their supply routes before the monsoons set in.

While the fighting has become heavier, the villagers of Preah Prasap have had to evacuate their homes. On at least three occasions their houses have been destroyed, and the situation has prompted the survivors to leave the village altogether. For many, the width of the river is far enough. They are assisted by the Khmer forces on the short move. They take few possessions and wait, confident that as long as they remain in sight of their village they will soon be able to return.

This film, shot by VISNEWS cameraman Neil Davis, may be cross-referenced with an earlier production no. 6563/71, dealing with earlier fighting around the village.
