  • Description

NIGERIA GOES TO THE POLL TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY) AFTER ALL. ON THE EVE OF THE COUNTRY'S FIRST FEDERAL GENERAL ELECTION SINCE INDEPENDENCE, THE MAIN OPPOSITION GROUP DECIDED ON A BOYCOTT, BUT THE GOVERNMENT DECIDED TO GO THROUGH WITH IT AND PUT THE ARMY ON FULL ALERT.

AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE POLLING BOOTHS WOULD BE OPEN, MEMBERS OF TWO ELECTIONS COMMISSIONS FOR THE EAST AND MIDWEST NIGERIA ANNOUNCED THEIR RESIGNATION. IN THESE TWO REGIONS, THE RULING PARTIES ARE BOYCOTTING THE ELECTION. IN THE NORTH AND WEST REGIONS, THEY SUPPORT IT.

THE MAIN OPPOSITION GROUP, THE UNITED PROGRESSIVE GRAND ALLIANCE, IN CALLING THE BOYCOTT, ADVISED ALL ITS CANDIDATES TO WITHDRAW. IN LAGOS, YESTERDAY, 2,000 OF ITS SUPPORTERS TOOK PART IN A MARCH THROUGH THE CITY.

PLACARDS AND BANNERS PROCLAIMED THE ELECTION WAS A FRAUD AND THAT THE OTHER MAJOR PARTY THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL ALLIANCE, HAD RIGGED IT TO ALLOW THEIR 68 CANDIDATES TO BE RETURNED UNOPPOSED.

TROOPS OF THE 10,000-STRONG ARMY, DROVE THROUGH THE STREETS IN A SHOW OF STRENGTH AS THE DEMONSTRATORS MOVED TOWARDS THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING AND THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE. IT WAS QUIET AT FIRST BUT GATHERED IN STRENGTH AS MORE PEOPLE JOINED IN AND FINALLY RIOT POLICE HAD TO BE CALLED IN, TO BREAK UP THE CROWDS.
