    ITALY'S FIRST GUIDED MISSILE CRUISER, THE "GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI" STEAMED INTO NEW YORK HARBOUR YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO THE TRADITIONAL FIREBOAT GREETING. THE VESSEL FIRED A 21-GUN SALUTE BEFORE BEING TOWED TO ITS BERTH.

    THE "GARIBALDI" WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC DURING HER NINE-DAY STAY, PARTICULARLY FOR THE BENEFIT OF NEW YORK'S BIG ITALIAN COMMUNITY.

    ON SEPTEMBER 14, THE "GARIBALDI" ARRIVED AT NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, WHERE SHE PERFORMED A COMPLETE CYCLE OF TESTS DESIGNED TO CHECK THE FULL EFFICIENCY AND CAPABILITY OF HER MISSILE SYSTEM.

    TOGETHER WITH OTHER UNITS OF THE ITALIAN NAVAL AND ARMED FORCES, THE "GARIBALDI" WILL PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE NATO DEFENCE SYSTEM, TO WHICH ITALY HAS BEEN ALLIED SINCE 1949. ON HER RETURN TO ITALY SHE WILL BECOME THE FLAGSHIP OF THE ITALIAN NAVY. THE SHIP'S COMMANDING OFFICER IS CAPTAIN GLICERIO AZZONI.

    IN ONLY EIGHT-TENTHS OF A SECOND THE "GARIBALDI" CAN LAUNCH TWO SUPERSONIC MISSILES - WITH TWO MORE TO FOLLOW AT 30-SECOND INTERVALS. ONCE LAUNCHED THE MISSILE TRAVELS AT TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND.
