  • Description

An estimated one million Seoulites gathered in the South Korean capital's Changchungdang Park on Thursday 21st February to protest the attack on two unarmed southern trawlers by North Korean gun-boats last Friday 15th February.

The families of many of the 25 or more fishermen captured during the incident -- in which one of the trawlers was sunk and another towed away -- were among the demonstrators in Seoul, demanding the return of the men and an apology from Pyongyang.

Housewives, students and factory workers carried placards denouncing North Korea and shouted anti-communist slogans during the rally, which was organised by the Seoul Chapter of the Korean Anti-Communist League.

The massive protest was one of several held in major South Korean cities following the trawler incident. Relations between North and South Korea have deteriorated badly since the attack and a propaganda campaign involving radio broadcasts and even balloon-carried pamphlets has been waged between Pyongyang and Seoul.
