  • Description

THE NAIROBI CITY COUNCIL BURNT DOWN THOUSANDS OF SHANTY HOMES YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) AS PART OF ITS CAMPAIGN TO CLEAN UP SLUMS IN THE CITY.

THERE WERE CLAIMS THAT THE INHABITANTS HADN'T BEEN GIVEN ENOUGH NOTICE AND AS A RESULT MANY HAD NO ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION. IT WAS ALSO CLAIMED THAT SOME OF THE INHABITANTS LOST ALL THEIR POSSESSIONS AS THE FIRE SWEPT THROUGH THE ROWS OF HUTS.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE COUNCIL SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN PLENTY OF PRIOR NOTICE AND IN FACT SOME FAMILIES AND BEGUN MOVING OUT EVEN BEFORE THE FIRES WERE LIT. WHEN ASKED IF ACCOMMODATION HAD BEEN FOUND FOR THE ESTIMATED TWO THOUSAND HOMELESS FAMILIES, THE SPOKESMAN IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT THE DISPLACED WERE SQUATTERS AND IT WAS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE COUNCIL TO LOOK AFTER THEM.

MOST OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE SHANTY HOMES COME FROM THE FOUR CORNERS OF KENYA, ATTRACTED BY THE BIG CITY. MOST OF THEM WERE UNEMPLOYED.
