  • Description

King Baudouin of the Belgians and his Spanish fiancee, Dona Fabiola de Mora y Aragon, made their first official appearance together, Sept 17, when they received the press at Ciergnon Castle in the Ardennes, southern Belgium.

Hundreds of Belgian and foreign journalists, still photographers and cameramen waited outside the iron castle gates in a drizzling rain to meet the couple. Then King Baudouin and his fiancee emerged from a side doorway and walked through the line of newsmen. No questions were allowed. Reporters who congratulated the King were greeted with a smile and a word of thanks.

King Baudouin wore a dark-green blazer, dark-grey flannels and brown shoes. Dona Fabiola braved the cold wind in a salmon-pink silk dress and blue cardigan. Her only jewellery was a necklace of semi-precious stones and two golden bracelets on one arm.

Later they were joined by ex-King Leopold and his wife, Princess Lilliane de Rethy, and the two daughters of Leopold's second marriage, Marie Christine and Marie Esmeralda.
