    SLATE INFORMATION

Background: In South Africa, about one thousand black men and women staged an illegal march through the streets of Soweto on Saturday (17 April). The march was part of a funeral service for Mr. Elias Isimo, a former member of the banned African National Congress (ANC), and an ex-political prisoner. The marchers waved an ANC banner over the coffin and sang freedom songs. Police kept a close watch, but no arrests were made. Elias Tsimo, 62, was arrested in 1963 on sabotage charges. He served a sentence at Robbens Island prison, where ANC leader Nelson Mandela was a fellow prisoner.
