  • Description

TWO PERSONS AT LEAST WERE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN DROWNED IN FLOODS IN THE MIDI WHERE THE RHONE AND ITS TRIBUTARIES, SWOLLEN BY HEAVY RAIN, WERE RUNNING 10 FEET (3 METRES) ABOVE NORMAL LEVEL YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

AT AVIGNON THE RHONE CONTINUED TO RISE THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON AND MANY STREETS IN THE LOW LYING PARTS OF THE CITY WERE UNDER THREE FEET (1 METRE) OF WATER. MOTOR TRAFFIC WAS AT A STANDSTILL AND FIREMEN WERE OUT IN BOATS DISTRIBUTING FOOD. SCHOOL CHILDREN HAD TO BE FERRIED TO SCHOOL AND HOME AGAIN.

ARLES AND NIMES WERE ALSO HIT BY THE FLOODS AND RAILWAY LINES WERE CUT FOR A TIME. AT PRESENT THERE IS NO OFFICIAL ESTIMATE OF THE DAMAGE, BUT LOSS OF CROPS AND CATTLE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE INDICATE IT COULD BE QUITE HIGH.

FARTHER NORTH, IN THE UPPER LOIRE VALLEY, HOUSES AND FIELDS WERE FLOODED, AND A BRIDGE SWEPT AWAY IN FLOODS CAUSED BY AN INCREASE IN THE WATER RELEASED FROM THE GRANGENT DAM.
