  • Description

Agriculture ministers from the nine member countries of the European Economic Community met in Brussels on Monday in an attempt to hammer out a common agricultural policy.

Difficulties in working out an acceptable system caused the break-up, without a decision, of a meeting in December - before the United Kingdom, the Irish Republic and Denmark joined the Common Market on January 1. The common agricultural policy is scheduled to come into effect on February 1.

The problems on the agenda include the implications of the floating pound on farm regulations, technical adjustments in the U.K. cereals sector following rises in world prices, and setting border taxes on pig meat, poultry and eggs.

SYNOPSIS: At the Charlemagne Building in Brussels, the meeting reconvened on Monday of agricultural ministers from the members of the European Economic Community.

The ministers are trying to agree on a common agricultural policy, which is scheduled to come into effect on February 1.

Denmark, the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic have joined the Common Market since the farming ministers last met, in December.

That meeting broke up without a decision being reached because the ministers simply couldn't agree. Now they must try to work out an acceptable approach to such topics as taxes on pig meat, poultry and eggs, the effect of the floating pound, and the impact of dearer cereals.
