Background: THE LATEST BATTLE OF ALGIERS, BETWEEN THE FRENCH ARMY AND COMMANDOS OF THE SECRET ARMY ORGANISATION (O.A.S.), WAS OVER AND ONCE AGAIN THE CITY RETURNED TO A COMPARATIVE STATE OF CALM, MARCH 24TH.

IN MANY PARTS OF ALGIERS, PARTICULARLY IN THE HEAVILY O.A.S. CONCENTRATED SUBURB OF BAS EL OUED, COULD BE SEEN EVIDENCE OF THE FIGHTING IN WHICH 12 TROOPS AND ABOUT 20 CIVILIANS WERE KILLED. A COMMON SIGHT WERE WALLS POCKMARKED WITH BULLET HOLES, SMASHED WINDOWS, WRECKED CARS AND GUSHING WATER PIPES, SHATTERED BY GUNFIRE BUT STILL UNREPAIRED.

THERE WAS NO SIGN OF ANY ARMY OFFENSIVE AGAINST THE O.A.S., BUT SECURITY FORCES WERE MASSED THICKLY AROUND BAS EL OUED. NERVOUS CONSCRIPTS PATROLLED THE STREETS, OBVIOUSLY MINDFUL OF THE AMBUSH BY O.A.S. GUNMEN WHICH BEGAN THE LAST BATTLE. ALL HIGH BUILDINGS COULD BE VANTAGE POINTS FOR SHARP-SHOOTING SNIPERS WERE TREATED WITH CAUTION.

ALGIERS POLICE OFFERED TO CALL A TRUCE IN THEIR OPERATIONS AGAINST THE O.A.S. SO THAT THE WOUNDED COULD BE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL. THE OFFER HOWEVER WAS REJECTED - THE VICTIMS FEARING THEY WOULD BE PUT IN FRONT OF A FIRING SQUAD IF THEY SURRENDERED.

WHILE CHILDREN PLAYED ON STREETS WHICH A FEW HOURS BEFORE HAD BEEN A BATTLEFIELD, AMBULANCES AND OTHER REMINDERS OF THE TRAGEDY OF ALGERIA WENT ABOUT THEIR GRIM WORK. OVERHEAD WHIRLED HELICOPTERS ASSISTING HIGHER FLYING FIGHTER AIRCRAFT IN A CONSTANT WATCH FOR THE NEXT MOVE BY THE O.A.S.
