  • Description

PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY LAID THE FIRST STONE IN THE IVORY COAST'S LARGEST ENGINEERING PROJECT - THE KASSOU DAM - ON FRIDAY (14 NOVEMBER).

THE KOSSOU DAM WILL SPAN THE RIVER BANDAMA, 450 KILOMETRES (280 MILES) NORTHWEST OF THE CAPITAL, ABIDJAN. THE ROCK-BASED DAM, TO BE COMPLETED IN FOUR YEARS, WILL PRODUCE 530 MILLION KILOWATT-HOURS OF ELECTRIC POWER ANNUALLY. IN 1968, THE TOTAL POWER PRODUCTION OF THE IVORY COAST WAS ONLY 370 MILLION KILOWATT-HOURS.

THE DAM PROJECT WILL PROVIDE 2,000 NEW JOBS, REGULATE THE FLOW OF THE RIVER, AND ALLOW PERMANENT IRRIGATION OF ADJACENT LAND - AS WELL AS INCREASING THE DEVELOPING INDUSTRIALIZATION OF THE COUNTRY.

AMERICAN, ITALIAN AND FRENCH OFFICIALS CONNECTED WITH THE PROJECT ATTENDED THE OPENING CEREMONY, AS WELL AS MINISTER OF THE IVORY COAST AND DIPLOMATS.

CAPITAL OF 105 MILLION DOLLARS (GBP43 MILLION STERLING) FOR THE DAM HAS BEEN RAISED BY AN AMERICAN BANK, AN ITALIAN SYNDICATE AND THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT. EARLIER IN THE WEEK, THE GOVERNMENT HAD SIGNED AGREEMENTS WITH THE SYNDICATE AND WITH THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT FOR THE SUPPLY AND INSTALLATION OF TURBINES, ALTERNATORS, TRANSFORMERS AND HIGH TENSION POWER LINES WHICH WILL CARRY THE POWER FROM KOSSOU TO ABIDJAN AND BOUAKE.

AMONG THE SPEAKERS AT THE CEREMONY WAS M. AOUSSOU KOFFI, PRESIDENT OF THE BANDAMA VALLEY AUTHORITY, WHO SAID THAT MORE THAN EIGHT YEARS OF PROSPECTING, RESEARCH AND NEGOTIATION HAD GONE INTO THE PLANNING OF THE DAM.
