  • Description

The Search for oil in the Republic of Chad has expanded recently.

On Tuesday (4 September) a third oil drilling site was inaugurated at the village of Foyo-Mao in the Kanem district, about 150 miles (240 kilometres) north of the capital, N'Djamena.

The exploratory work is being carried out by the Continental Oil Company (CONOCO) for the Chad Government. The company has employed some local tribesmen, who've been living in mobile air-conditioned housing units made in the United States. The company has also built an airstrip at the site.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by a delegation from the Chad Government, headed by the Minister of State for Civil Service and Labour, Djibrine Kherallah.

Speaking for President N'Gartha Tombalbaye, M. Kherallah said the search for oil was a gamble, but test drillings and a geological survey of the area had been promising.

    M. Kherallah said the discovery of oil would provide relief for the thousands of tribesmen who had suffered from the Sahelian drought. It would also help boost the country's economy.

The inauguration ceremony was accompanied by music and dancing by hundreds of local tribesmen.

Until now, the search for oil in Chad has been going on -- without much luck -- in the Doba, Nya and Maramaye regions south of N'Djamena.
