  • Description

DEMONSTRATORS PARADED WITH BANNERS THROUGH THE STREETS OF RENNES, THE MAIN TOWN OF THE FRENCH PROVINCE OF BRITTANY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S INDUSTRIAL POLICY.

THE DEMONSTRATORS' MAIN OBJECTION IS THE CLOSING DOWN OF THREE RAILWAY LINES IN BRITTANY. SEVERAL FACTORIES ARE ALSO CLOSING.

IT'S ALSO CLAIMED THAT THE BUDGET FOR EDUCATION, WELFARE AND CREDIT FACILITIES FOR FAMILIES IN BRITTANY ARE INSUFFICIENT. THE UNIONS SAY THE SITUATION IS MADE MORE DIFFICULT BY A GENERAL FREEZING OF SALARIES.

BRITTANY'S POPULATION IS SAID TO BE INCREASING CONSIDERABLY, AND THE UNIONS WANT TO SEE EXISTING INDUSTRY MAINTAINED WHILE NEW WORK OPPORTUNITIES ARE CREATED FOR THE YOUNG LEAVING SCHOOL.
