  • Description

A United States Navy DC6, carrying members of a band accompanying President Eisenhower on his South American tour, collided with a Brazilian airliner over Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janiero, in thick fog Feb 23. Both plunged into the bay.

Officials reports Feb 26 said 29 bodies and 14 survivors had been pulled from the water. Authorities listed 62 persons aboard the two aircraft - 37 in the Navy transport, and 25 in the C47 of Brazil's Real airline.

President Eisenhower had just ended a triumphal visit to Rio only a few hours before the two planes collided. He was then in Sao Paulo.

The bandsmen were scheduled to play that same night at a formal US Embassy reception given on President Eisenhower's behalf for Brazilian President Kubitschek.
