  • Description

This year's July military parade in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reminded onlookers of the power of the military establishment, at a time when General Alejandro Lanusse, the current President, has been promising the people a future and to the five-year-old army regime.

The President promises democratic elections not later than 1973, and these might allow a return to power of ex-President Juan Peron or his supporters, who still constitute the largest single political force in Argentina.

Our Production No. 7832/71, also serviced today, refers to this topic. It concerns an important meeting of Peronist supporters addressed by Mr Jorge Paladino, who recently had talks with ex-President Peron in Madrid.

Also seen in this coverage with President Lanusse is visiting President Pacheko Areco of Uruguay.

SYNOPSIS: This year's July military parade in Buenos Aires reminded onlookers once again of the power of the military establishment, at a time when the people are being promised an end to the five-year-old army regime. The promise has been made by President Alejandro Lanusse, who watched the parade with visiting President Pacheko Areco on Uruguay.

President Lanusse, who is an army General, was goaled during the Presidency of Juan Peron. Yet the elections which have been promised could allow a return to power by the Peronists. Many of General Lanusse's old comrades-in-arms for the return of 75-year-old Peron, yet President Lanusse seems to have concluded that all interests will be allowed the possibility of winning the promised elections.

Supporters of ex-President Peron still constitute the biggest single political force in Argentina.

President Lanusse, here reviewing the officer cadets of the Argentina army, ousted President Levingston last March, a predecessor who had also promised a return to representative Government. President Levingston reviewed a similar parade to this one last Year. Now it seems probable, after all the promises, that the elections will come not later than 1973.
