    AGRICULTURAL EXPERTS AND TRAINEES DISCUSSED THE NEED FOR AN AFRICAN AGRICULTURAL SURVEY AT A MEETING IN YAOUNDE, CAMEROUN EARLIER THIS MONTH.

    THE MEETING WAS ATTENDED BY 35 TRAINEES FROM FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES IN AFRICA, AND WAS PART OF A TRAINING PROGRAMME IN THE TECHNIQUES OF AGRICULTURAL SURVEY.

    SPEAKING TO THE PROGRAMME, M. JEAN KEUTCHA, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE CAMEROUN, EMPHASIZED THE NEED FOR ACCURATE AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS IF PRODUCTION WAS TO BE INCREASED IN THE YEARS AHEAD.

    OTHER SPEAKERS INCLUDED M. SIMAIKA, A CO-DIRECTOR OF THE TRAINING PROGRAMME, AND M. HEINRICH SARTORIUS, UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME REPRESENTATIVE IN THE CAMEROUN.

    A WORLD WIDE AGRICULTURAL SURVEY IS PART OF THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL ORGANISATION'S (FAO) PROJECTS FOR 1970.

    SPEAKERS POINTED OUT THAT THE WORLD POPULATION WAS EXPECTED TO DOUBLE TO SIX BILLION PERSONS BY THE YEAR 2000, AND BASIC AGRICULTURAL DATA MUST BE COLLECTED IF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES ARE TO BE FULLY EFFECTIVE.

    THE TRAINEES WERE FROM ALGERIA, BURUNDI, CAMEROUN, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, CONGO-KISHASA, THE IVORY COAST, DAHOMEY, UPPER VOLTA, MADAGASCAR, MALI, MAURITANIA, NIGER, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, CHAD, TOGO, AND TUNISIA.

    THE PROGRAMME WAS SPONSORED BY THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE CAMEROUN GOVERNMENT.
