  • Description

Chay Blyth, the British yachtsman who is attempting the first solo round-the-world voyage from east to west in his ketch British Steel, was last reported battling stormy seas 1,200 miles (2,000 km) north-west of Cape Horn. Last month, just before rounding the Horn, he made a rendez-vous with the Royal Navy ice patrol ship Endurance.

The crew of the Endurance, who sent out a helicopter and then a long-boat to meet him, were the first human beings Blyth had seen since he put to sea sixty-six days earlier. He took the opportunity to hand over his ship's logs, films and letters, and to take on provisions for the next leg of the voyage.

The sea was calm for the meeting, but soon afterwards lived up to their stormy reputation, giving Chay Blyth a force 9 gale to contend with.

This film of the brief meeting was shot by a Royal Navy cameraman.
