Chinese aid is helping to finance the construction of a four million pound (sterling) conference centre in Khartoum.

Two hundred Chinese construction workers are on the project together with 500 Sudanese workers. construction began in January 1973 and work is expected to be completed by 25 May, 1976 to mark "Revolution Day".

All the materials being used, except for cement and sand, have been imported from China.

The Khartoum Conference Centre will be used for major international meetings on African and Arab issues.

Sudan expects to host the first Afro-Arab Heads of State Summit next year and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Head of State meeting in 1977.

Plans for the centre include an international conference hall designed to seat 120 delegations of four people; a banquet hall with seating for a thousand and a theatre-cinema with room for up to 1200 people.

Sudanese President Jaafir Al Nimeri believes the conference centre will be one of the most impressive in the world and has praised china for their help.

"With China we have good relations," he said.

"The Chinese are both sensitive and strict about non-interference in domestic affairs. We also admire their approach to technical co-operation and they are executing some important projects in the sudan," he added.
