  • Description

The nine-man executive of the International Olympic Committee ended their first day of talks here with no decision yet taken on the controversial issue of South African participation in this year's Olympic Games in Mexico City.

A brief communique after a five-hour session at the Chateau de Vidy, near Lausanne, said the South African position was reviewed but no decision was taken. The communique states that "only information was conveyed".

Among the other matters considered at the meeting was a report from the Mexican Olympic Committee on their preparations for the international contests and how the uncertainty of the South African position was affecting preparations.

Reuter says that this reference was generally taken to mean that unless a final decision of South African participation was reached soon the Olympic Games might not be held at all.

The executive is to meet again in secret session tomorrow (Sunday) for further discussions.
