    THE CANNES INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ENDED ON FRIDAY. BRITAIN WON THE COVETED GOLDEN PALM AWARD WITH "THE KNACK", A SATIRE ON TEENAGERS. THE JURY'S SPECIAL PRIZE WENT TO THE JAPANESE FILM, "KWAIDAN" -- WHICH CONSISTED OF THREE SUPERNATURAL TALES.

    THE AWARDS FOR THE BEST ACTOR AND ACTRESS ALSO WENT TO BRITAIN FOR TERENCE STAMP AND SAMANTHA EGGAR'S PERFORMANCES IN THE AMERICAN FILM, "THE COLLECTOR".

    THE JAPANESE FILM WHICH WON THE SPECIAL AWARD WAS DIRECTED BY MR. KOBAYASHI. IT USED TO AN EXTRAORDINARY EFFECT A COMBINATION OF COLOUR AND ELABORATELY-STYLISED FITTINGS TO ILLUSTRATE THREE STORIES WRITTEN BY THE 19TH CENTURY WRITER, LAFCADIO HEARN.
