  • Description

Britain's "Flying Saucer" - the Saunders Roe hovercraft - left Cowes, Isle of Wight, where it completed its final trials recently, and set out for Calais Jul 23 in readiness for an attempt at a Channel crossing to Dover.

The hovercraft was hoisted on to an Admiralty lighter. This was one of the few times that the hovercraft's underside is likely to be seen for normally it rises on a cushion of air only a few feet above the surface of the water.

From Cowes, the lighter and its cargo set out for Calais. There the hovercraft will make demonstration flights before making its first bid to cross the Channel.
