  • Description

AT A SPECIAL CEREMONY IN JERUSALEM ON THURSDAY, KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN OPENED THE FIRST PALESTINE NATIONAL CONGRESS TO BE HELD SINCE THE PALESTINE WAR IN 1948.

THE FIVE DAY CONFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL THE ARAB STATES, AND DELEGATES FROM PALESTINE ORGANISATIONS.

KING HUSSEIN TOLD THE DELEGATES THAT JORDAN BELIEVED "THERE CAN BE NO LIFE, FREEDOM, UNION OR PRESTIGE FOR THE ARABS EXCEPT WITH PALESTINE". HE SAID HE "WOULD BE HONOURED TO GIVE HIS LIFE AND HIS BLOOD SO PALESTINE MIGHT RETURN AS IT WAS - ARAB, FREE AND DIGNIFIED".

THE CONGRESS, HE SAID, WAS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW STAGE OF "ORGANISED AND PLANNED EFFORT".

DELEGATES ARE TO DISCUSS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PALESTINE ENTITY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CAIRO ARAB SUMMIT RESOLUTIONS. THEY WILL ALSO DISCUSS A DRAFT SUBMITTED BY MR. AHMED EL SHUKEIRY, PALESTINE REPRESENTATIVE AT THE ARAB LEAGUE, FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANISATION.
