Background: The possibility has arisen of a summit meeting between France and the African franc zone countries over the status of the CFA franc, the monetary unit of French-speaking Africa, following talks in Togo between President Pompidou and President Eyadema.
President Pompidou arrived in Lome, the capital of Togo, to a warm welcome from President Eyadema on Wednesday (22 November). He is on the last stage of a five-day West African tour that earlier took him to Upper Volta.
The Togolese people, apparently little affected by the problems of economic differences, gave the president a colourful welcome, both on his arrival and when he toured the capital.
President Eyadema, soon after President Pompidou's arrival, called for an exhaustive study to fix a new parity for the CFA franc that would be more favourable to French-speaking Africa. He said that, while one French franc brought 50 CFA francs in Togo, banks in France continued to exchange at lower rates.
The two presidents were expected to spend some time discussing the status of the CFA franc, as well as development projects in Togo and the question of the West African Economic Community in which Togo has refused to take part.
President Pompidou has suggested that the problems of the CFA franc should be discussed by all the French zone African countries.
