  • Description

Japan's efforts to gain better relations with the Arab nations continued on Saturday and Sunday (September 7-8) when a delegation from Japan attended a telecommunications conference in Damascus. It was the 7th scientific seminar on the subject organised by the General Association of Arab Engineers.

The seminar covered latest advances in satellites, both military and civilian. Their future uses were discussed at length with the major lecture coming from the head of the Japanese delegation, Mr. Sujimoto.

The presence of the Japanese comes at a time when they are attempting to strengthen their relations with the Arab nations. Last July Japan promised Algeria 400-million dollars (about 175 million sterling) for a telecommunications system and agreed on credits of 10 million dollars (about 4.2 million sterling) each for Jordan, Sudan and Morocco.

The Syrian seminar was attended by delegates from most Arab nations, France, England and the United States. Developments in television and satellite communication were the main topics discussed.
