  • Description

In Lebanon, rally was held by the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) on Thursday (11 January) to commemorate those killed in terrorist activities during the past year. Held at Beirut's Arab University, the annual ceremony marked the Palestinian Martyrs' Day, and was attended by several leading figures in the Palestinian movement.

SYNOPSIS: PLO leader Yasser Arafat presided over the rally. Abu Iyad, Deputy leader of Fatah, one of the movement's leading guerrilla groups, criticised Egypt's peace initiative with Israel and the United States's role in negotiations.

After reiterating the PLO's continued opposition to any peace settlement with Israel, Yasser Arafat underlined his organisation's belief in guerrilla tactics to solve Middle East problems, by presenting awards to the relatives of people killed while involved in terrorist activities. The father of Dahlia Mograbi received a medal for his daughter's role in PLO hijacking and shoot-out on an Israeli bus last March, when some sixty civilians and soldiers were killed. During the ceremony, awards were also made to Palestinian poets and artists who have supported PLO activities in their work, and to relatives of several members of Palestinian guerrilla groups who were killed in 1978.
