  • Description

Seventeen-year-old American Carl Cox, whose father is a lecturer at Nairobi University, won the First-ever Kenyan National Cycling Championship in Nairobi on Sunday (2 June).

Eighteen-year-old local schoolboy Keith Noronha finished close second.

Kenya's Amateur Cycling Association was only revived two years ago, so cycling is a relatively new sport to Kenya. Many of those in Sunday's senior and junior races did not have racing bicycles so the first prize was a 90-pound Stirling racing bike. (about 215 US Dollars).

Kenya's Minister of State Mr. Mbiyu Koinange stared the race and presented the prizes. He told Cox that his time of 2 hours 24 minutes for the 50-mile (80 kilometre) senior race encouraged him to hop Kenya would do well in cycling at the next Olympics, In Montreal, Canada.

Last week Kenya founded an East African Cycling Federation consisting of itself, Uganda and Tanzania. Sunday's race helped the Kenyan selectors decide the five cyclists to represent Kenya at Zambia's cycling championships at the end of June. The Cycling Association' chairman, Mr. J. Wawire, said that unless Mr. Koinange, the Association's patron, helped finance the trip, the side would have to pay their own air fares to Zambia.

Kenya's Avon Rubber Company Ltd. sponsored the senior race and the 25-mile (40 kilometre) junior race.
