  • Description

THERE WAS A CALL FOR AN INTERNATIONAL LEGAL DEFINITION OF DEATH AT A SYMPOSIUM ON HEART TRANSPLANT OPERATIONS ORGANISED BY THE GHANA MEDICAL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION AT LEGON.

THE PROPOSAL FOR AN INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED DEFINITION WAS MADE BY A MAGISTRATE, MR. ABOAGYE DA COSTA. HE SAID IT WAS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT SURGEONS ANXIOUS TO SAVE A LIFE DID NOT REMOVE A DONOR'S HEART WHILE THERE WAS A CHANCE HE MIGHT LIVE. HE REFERRED TO THE RECENT HEART TRANSPLANTS IN SOUTH AFRICA, WHERE HE AID THE PROBLEM WAS MADE ESPECIALLY ACUTE BY THAT COUNTRY'S ATTITUDES TO RACE.

DR. GRAU WAS ANOTHER SPEAKER. HE POINTED OUT THAT THE CAPE TOWN OPERATIONS ON DR. PHILIP BLAIBERG, WHO RECEIVED THE HEART OF A YOUNG COLOURED (MIXED RACE) MAN, HAD AT LEAST PROVED THAT HEARTS HAVE NO RACIAL PREJUDICE.

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SYMPOSIUM WAS PROFESSOR EWEN, HEAD OF THE ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA AND HIMSELF A SOUTH AFRICAN WHO'S STRONGLY OPPOSED TO HIS COUNTRY'S APARTHEID POLICY.
