  • Description

MEETING IN BRUSSELS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THE COMMON MARKET COMMISSION DECIDED TO REDUCE IMPORT DUTIES ON FROZEN CHICKENS BY NINE PFENNIGS A KILO (ABOUT THE PENNY A POUND).

THE UNEXPECTED MOVE CAME AFTER AGREEMENT LAST WEEK BY THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY (E.E.C.) AND THE UNITED STATES THAT THE "CHICKEN WAR" SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO AN ARBITRATION PROCEDURE IN G.A.T.T.(THE GENERAL AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADES).PREVIOUSLY THE UNITED STATES HAD REJECTED AN OFFER BY THE E.E.C.TO REDUCE THE DUTIES BY II PFENNIGS A KILO.

EXPLAINING THE COMMISSION'S DECISION, A SPOKESMAN SAID IT AUTOMATICALLY FOLLOWED A RISE IN WORLD PRICES OF FROZEN CHICKENS.THE REDUCTION WAS OF A SUPPLEMENTARY LEVY, WHICH WAS TIED TO THE WORLD PRICE LEVEL AND OPERATED ON A SLIDING SCALE BASIS.

IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE COMMISSION'S DECISION WILL NOT AFFECT THE PREVIOUSLY AGREED ARBITRATION PROCEDURE WITHIN G.A.T.T.THE COMMISSION ARE MEETING UNTIL THURSDAY ON OTHER AGRICULTURAL PROBLEMS.
