Background: President Suharto of Indonesia expressed his concern about the "big power" moves in and round Vietnam at the first round of talks with Japanese Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira on Thursday (7 June).

President Suharto, who arrived on Wednesday for a four-day unofficial visit, had a talk at Ohira's official residence for more than two hours, including 90 minutes of private discussion.

At the outset of the meeting, President Suharto asked for Japanese cooperation in developing his country's mineral resources and in dealing with the Vietnamese refugee problem.

He asked Mr. Ohira that Japan accept more Vietnamese refugees and co-operate in a proposed refugee processing centre on Indonesia's Galang Island.

The Japanese Government recently increased to 500 the numbers of Vietnamese refugees who will be allowed to settle permanently in Japan.

President Suharto also asked for Japan's continued and increased co-operation in the Indonesia's urea plant programme, one of the five projects of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

When Mr. Ohira expressed hope for stabilised supplies of Indonesian oil to Japan, President Suharto said he anticipated Japanese cooperation in exploiting new oil resources, officials said.
