The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ismail Fahmy, said on Sunday (14 September) that the United States had pledged to achieve a second Israeli withdrawal from the Syrian Golan Heights, and would also ensure that Syria was not attacked before then.
Mr. Fahmy was addressing a meeting of the chairmen of the People's Assembly's Arab, Foreign and National Security Committee. He was defending Egypt's polices following criticism of them from Syria and other Arab states over the Egyptian-Israeli Sinai agreement which was signed two weeks ago.
He told this audience "There are pledges at the highest level in the United States to achieve another disengagement on the Syrian front. There is also a pledge of non-aggression on Syria, and another of continuing efforts towards a comprehensive settlement and continued momentum until such a settlement is reached."
Mr. Fahmy said that this also included restoration of the Palestinian people's rights. He told delegates who were angry at the intensive campaign against Egypt, particularly by Syria and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) that they should not be disturbed by such campaigns. He described them as "petty and vindictive political agitation."
Other speakers at the meeting included the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Said Marei, and Ms. Kalima El Arousi.
