    In Singapore on Tuesday (29 August), Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew addressed thousands of people who attended an election rally held by his People's Action Party(PAP).

    He told the crowd his party was dedicated to a prosperous, stable and just society.

    The People's Action Party has been the ruling party in Singapore since 1959 and since 1968, it has been unopposed in Parliament.

    It s present five year term was not due to expire until April 1973. But the government called for an early election because if felt it had already fulfilled its mandate to solve the economic problems caused by the rundown of British bases on the Island.

    The election was being held on Saturday (2 September).
