  • Description

The current British tour by the national basketball team of the People's Republic of China continued on Friday (12 November) with a full international match against England.

SYNOPSIS: The match was played at the brand new Sports Centre in Coventry, and the reputation of the Chinese attracted a packed crowd. The Centre had only been opened two weeks earlier and it will be the home court of Team Fiat. England made an uncertain start in the first half with their lack of experience in international competition showing all too clearly.

The Chinese, who are currently the Champions of Asia, also started with a diplomatically low profile. At first they moved mechanically as if still suffering from jet lag, but then they became significantly less sluggish as the first half progressed.

Members of Team Fiat gave England support with the help of bolls and klaxon horns, and their team took heart so that by half-time the teams were level at 37 points each.

In the second half, China clung n to a modest lead early on, with Liu Yun and Cheng Fu-ken showing inspired anticipation around the court. England's basic faults were mainly organisational, which was not surprising considering that their coach had only had them together for one-and-a-half hours training that morning.

England's lack of experience showed in some of their shooting, but as the Chinese continued to improve as the game drew to a climax, so did the home team's understanding and aggression. Their two most outstanding players were Shelley and Redford. It was their contribution that helped England to take the lead and finally win the match by 83 to 73.
